On Attempts to Transform the Communist Past into Democracy: Testimonies and Documents of Civil Society Institutions and Political Opposition in Russia until 2022

Project period: 2024

In the decade from the early 1990ies hundreds of civil society institutions and political parties were established in Russia and the political landscape was marked by a variety of political actors in the capital and the regions. The project’s goal is to make visibile and accessible for researchers the legacy of this important period of transition of the communist past into democracy in Russia before again turning into an authoritarian state. Within the framework of the project the following unique sources and documents in FSO's archive will be made accessible for researchers and the public:

  • Papers of the former Institute for Humanities and Political Studies (IPGI), Moscow
The institute was co-founded 1992 in Moscow by former dissident and later politician and member of Yabloko party Vyacheslav Igrunov. In the mid 1990ies it monitored intensivly the political landscape in Russia, especially in the regions. In addition to periodicals and newspapers from different russian regions the institute received a huge number of documents of informal associations and organizations of the third sector. The overall amount of the papers is more than 100 linear meters and the collections of documents were formed according to their belonging to one or another region, regardless of the ideology of the movement. A fairly weighty part of the collection was made up of documents from Moscow organizations like "Memorial“, the Social Initiatives Club, the Democratic Union and the archives of the journals "Panorama," "Paragraph," and "Daily News Service“.
  • Collection of self-published materials issued by russian political and civil society organizations
The collection’s materials dates back to 1992 and the content was being added to on an ongoing basis until 2022. The collection contains self-published materials issued by political and civil society organizations in Russia. In the vast majority of cases the self-published materials are documents intended for the general public and above all contain: information materials, booklets and leaflets, annual and/or analytical reports, background materials on specific topics and/or oppositional political party programmes and programmatic writings.

  • Digital Archive of Memorial Perm and Center for the Support of Democratic Youth Initiatives, Perm
Memorial Perm emerged in 1988 and for more than 30 years served as main actor of NGO and human rights scene in Perm, a city, which from the late 1990ies was known as the „capital of civil society“ in the Urals.
