Nonconformist Visions. Alternative Art and Culture in Central and East Europe: Descripting Papers of nonconformist Artists and their Artist’s Publications in the Archive of the Research Center for East European Studies

in cooperatio with the Verbundzentrale des GBV (VZG), financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
Project Period 04/2020 - 12/2022

In the framework of the archival project  personal papers and collections of alternative artists and their artist's publications from Cental and Eastern Europe will be made accessible in order to answer questions about art as a cross-border contact space during the Cold War and about the materiality of artistic products in the field of tension between dissent and consensus. Transnational thematic references of artists' publications will be made visible.

In terms of content, the focus lies on transnational networks of Soviet non-conformist art and artists from central europa of the international mail art scene of the 1970s/80s. In addition to materials from important informal artists from the Soviet Union, such as those of the artist couple Sergei Sigei/Ry Nikonova or the Moscow Conceptualists with their Moscow Archive for New Art (M.A.N.I. ), important legacies of key contacts in Western Europe will also be made accessible, including the legacy of the philosopher Boris Groys and his wife Natalia Nikitina, the editorial documents of the art magazine A-Ya, published in Paris, and the collection of central european alternative art gathered by western german art collector Klaus Groh. His collection alone contains of over two hundred archival boxes of artists' publications primarily from Poland, the former GDR and Czechoslovakia, as well as a smaller number from Hungary and the former Yugoslavia.

In cooperation with the Verbundzentrale des GBV (VZG), the indexing data from the FSO archive database is imported into national and international catalogs like Osmikon, arthistoricum.net and the portal Russian Art Archives Network (RAAN). This effort will significantly increase the visibility and usability of the holdings for research.
