Changing Europe Summer Schools
The programme of the 7th Changing Europe Summer School is now available on the summer school website.
Each year the Summer School takes place in a different European city. Within the context of post-socialist changes and European integration each Summer School has a specific thematic focus.
So far these have been:
* The impact of the global economic crisis on Central and Eastern Europe. Economic, political and social aspects (National Research University – Higher School of Economics, Moscow 2011)
* Informal Networks, clientelism and corruption in politics, state administration, business and society. Case studies from Central and Eastern Europe (Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague 2010)
* Civil society in Central and Eastern Europe before and after the end of socialism (National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", Kiev 2009)
* Central and Eastern Europe in a globalized world (University of Bremen 2008)
* Crises and conflicts in Eastern European states and societies. Stumbling blocks or stepping stones for democratisation? (German Historical Institute, Warsaw 2007)
* Justice as a societal and political matter. Equality, social and legal security as conditions for democracy and the market (Free University Berlin 2006)
Concept
Each year the Changing Europe Summer School brings together about 20 to 30 young academics (i.e. mainly doctoral students and also post-docs) from the social sciences and humanities working on issues related to countries in Central and Eastern Europe to give them a chance to present and discuss their research projects and to get better integrated into the academic community.
Summer School participants are selected with the help of about 40 international referees, who are integrated into a review panel. For each Changing Europe Summer School there are on average about 150 applications from all over the world.
All selected participants submit a written presentation of their research project, which is published on the website of the Summer School, so that the participants can get acquainted with all projects in advance. Selected papers are published in an edited volume in the Changing Europe book series. Alumni stay connected through a mailing list which by now has about 300 members.
Changing Europe Summer Schools last for a week and consist of four elements: (1) panels, where the participants present and discuss their research projects; (2) information sessions related to publication opportunities, grants and academic career perspectives; (3) programme parts related to the summer school topic and the host country: opening session with a key note speaker, simulation game, excursions, concluding round table; (4) informal meetings of the participants.
The Changing Europe Summer Schools are organised by the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen. The concept has been developed by Prof. Dr. Hans-Henning Schröder in cooperation with Dr. Sabine Fischer and Dr. Heiko Pleines. At present the responsible organiser is Dr. Heiko Pleines. He is supported by a Summer School assistant. The development of the Summer School, including the selection of topics and partners and the refinement of the concept, is regularly discussed with an advisory board, which at present has four members (see below).
Each Summer School is organised in cooperation with a local partner. Funding for the first five Summer Schools has been provided by the Volkswagen Foundation. Since 2011 the Summer Schools are funded on an individual basis.
